Everyone expects Liverpool to spend big on a striker this summer. It appears the Reds might have a different plan, however.

It's no secret whatsoever that Liverpool want to boost their attack in 2025. The Reds haven't really had a consistent provider of goals or assists other than Mo Salah this season.

Thankfully, he's been able to provide both and is on course to win the Premier League's Golden Boot and the Playmaker award. Stunning stuff from the Egyptian.

Liverpool, though, need someone else they can rely on. Both Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have provided decent output at times but they've also been fairly inconsistent with it.

The Reds want, above all, a reliable goalscorer as a no.9. Neither Darwin Nunez nor Diogo Jota have been able to provide that this season.

Or at least, that's what everyone expects Liverpool to want. Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike have been linked with mammoth transfers to Anfield but it's possible that the club head down a different direction altogether.

Liverpool want Florian Wirtz

Caughtoffside claims Liverpool want to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. The German is hotly tipped with an exit but the buying club isn't particularly clear right now.

Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have been linked again and again. One of those three is the most likely destination for Wirtz, certainly.

But it seems Liverpool want to try and make something special happen. It would be a statement signing - and a record one: Leverkusen would want €120m.

It's also one that would take everyone by surprise. There's no chance that the Reds spend big on Wirtz and a striker, basically, and bringing him in would suggest a change of plans.

And it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Liverpool see things that way. They've given a new contract to Salah, of course, and they may fancy backing him as their top scorer for one more season.

That opens the door to a more versatile signing for the attack - one as adept in providing goals as he is in scoring them. Wirtz fits that bill but whether he fits into the side is another matter.

He's primarily a no.10, after all, and not a no.9. We do believe he could play as a false 9 at Liverpool but spending €120m on 'could' is an enormous risk.

Perhaps the decision is to spend big on a no.10 who delivers more while paying less for a striker. Both Jonathan David (free) and Liam Delap (£30m) have been linked, after all.

We're not expecting Liverpool to sign Wirtz, we should say that. But it is exciting to see his name linked and there are ways it can be made to work.
