New Federico Chiesa exit route opens up
Federico Chiesa was Liverpool's only permanent signing during last summer's transfer window, arriving on a cut-price deal from Juventus.
The winger made 131 appearances during his time at Juve, scored 32 times and registered 23 assists for the club but was struggling to reach the same numbers towards the end of his time in Turin.
Liverpool Transfer News: Harry Kane wants to join as Reds in race to complete transfer Slot is DESPERATE for
When new manager Thiago Motta arrived at Juventus last summer, he was adamant he did not want Chiesa in the squad, saying: “He’s not part of our plans.”
The Italian was essentially frozen out by his former manager, despite having a year left on his contract, and was made to train away from the first team in pre-season.
So he made the move to Liverpool for £10 million, becoming Arne Slot’s only signing of the summer. However, Chiesa seems to be facing similar problems in England.
After playing catch up at Liverpool due to not playing since Italy’s Euro 2024 campaign, he was then struck with injury, which kept him sidelined for most of the first half of the season.
Consequently he has struggled to find minutes under Slot and appears to have been frozen out by him too.
Will Chiesa get minutes under Slot?
He has started just three games for Liverpool, none of these being in the Premier League and has just two goals for the Reds.
This may not even be enough to secure him a medal if Liverpool win the league.
Despite Chiesa coming on towards the end of the Carabao Cup final, and scoring in injury time to give Liverpool fans some hope, it was clear that the team would have benefited from the Italian coming off the bench earlier.
He will be hoping to pick up some Premier League minutes after that cameo, but his future at the club remains uncertain.
It looks like he could be another alongside Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz potentially departing in the summer, although his father, former Italy striker Enrico Chiesa, has told Italian media he is ‘very happy at Liverpool’.
Stop EVERYTHING: Harry Kane wants to join Liverpool
Is there a door open at his former club?
The Turin team were one of the only Italian clubs not to be linked with Chiesa in January, but with the departure of Motta from Juventus, it could open the door for him to return to his former club.
Motta was sacked at the weekend, after heavy defeats before the international break in Serie A, and going out of both the Champions League and Coppa Italia in February. Fabrizio Romano broke the news of his departure, and Chiesa liked the post.
