Liverpool are NOT expected to add to their squad during the January transfer window.

It has been described as the priority of sporting director Richard Hughes to sort out contracts for three expiring stars instead.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are now all FREE to discuss pre-contract agreements with potentially interested overseas clubs. With terms expiring in 2025, Liverpool are now in competition with other teams in order to tie down their own stars.

While it’s believed to be the wishes of Salah and Van Dijk to stay at Anfield, the future of Alexander-Arnold is less clear-cut. 2024 ended on the bombshell note that Real Madrid had approached Liverpool about a January transfer for the right-back, a bid which was swiftly rejected.

Madrid still believe they will get Alexander-Arnold at the end of his contract but a second January bid hasn’t been ruled out.

But while Hughes and Arne Slot are desperate to seal deals for those three, there are other players on the margins who could end up leaving this month.

Chiesa tells Liverpool he wants out

The one big question mark surrounds the fate of Liverpool’s ONLY summer signing for the 2024/25 season - Federico Chiesa.

It was reported earlier this week that Chiesa wished to return to Serie A - either on loan or with a view to a permanent deal this winter with game time at a premium at Anfield.

The Italian has only played FOUR times under Slot, and only once in the Premier League, with his international career also taking a hit since his move to England.

Clubs in Serie A are queuing up to sign the former Juventus star with Atalanta, Napoli, Inter, AC Milan, Roma and Fiorentina all linked with his signature.

Salary is believed to be the sticking point over any return to Italy but should that issue be overcome then Chiesa is expected to depart.

Chiesa is 'hugely frustrated' at Anfield

Anfield Watch revealed that the 27-year-old is homesick, dislikes the weather and is struggling with the physicality of the game in England. Furthermore, Chiesa is yet to make a positive impression on the training field with his attitude and application.

Now comes the news from TBR Football that Chiesa’s entourage has admitted to Liverpool that he would like to leave and the club are open to the idea.

The report adds that Chiesa is ‘hugely frustrated’ over his situation at Liverpool.

A January loan stint could reinvigorate his career and set him up for many successful years on Merseyside. Or else he could make a decisive move back next summer at the end of a hopefully beneficial loan spell.

Chiesa is under contract until 2027 and so the Reds will be optimistic of making a profit on a player they paid up to £12m for last summer.
