Trent Alexander-Arnold is a man in demand as Liverpool rebuff Real Madrid’s offer to sign him on a permanent deal in the January transfer window.

The Spanish giants were intent on landing the Reds defender this month ahead of Trent’s contract expiry in summer 2025.

However, as news broke on Tuesday of Madrid’s approach to Liverpool, it was confirmed that the Premier League leaders’ hierarchy had declined to enter into negotiations.

Liverpool are planning for titles this season - and sit top of the pile domestically and in the Champions League - and Alexander-Arnold will be a major part of those endeavours.

It was an illustration of Liverpool’s defiance in the face of Madrid pressure but the club must face the prospect of the England international now negotiating directly with los Blancos should he see his future at the Bernabeu.

Romano: Trent has 'no issues' with Liverpool stance

Now that the calendar has ticked over to January 1, 2025, Liverpool are powerless to prevent any one of Trent, Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk from holding discussions with overseas clubs.

Trent’s future plans are currently unknown, with the player only offering a cryptic celebration following his first goal of the season which came against West Ham on Sunday. He then jetted off to Venice for a brief trip before the Reds’ next game against Manchester United this weekend.

Tuesday’s events were a significant development in the Alexander-Arnold transfer saga, which is unlikely to get a resolution this month. And now noted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on the matter, revealing Trent’s state of mind following Madrid’s transfer approach.

Answering questions for his GIVEMESPORT newsletter, Romano was asked: “How is Trent Alexander-Arnold feeling with Liverpool refusing to entertain any Real Madrid offers in January?”

The Italian said: “Trent is already aware of Liverpool having no plans to let him leave in January. No issues and full focus on winning titles in Red, while Real Madrid keep insisting on a Trent deal for June.”

The Trent Alexander-Arnold - Real Madrid transfer dance will go on a little longer.
