Liverpool opted against bringing in anyone during the January transfer window. Second-place Arsenal went the same route - they've also stuck with the squad that got them here.

Manchester City, however, have been the absolute opposite. Their awful form over the last few months sparked an expensive transfer window.

Essentially, and to the surprise of no one, City are attempting to spend their way out of trouble. Around £200m has been sent to various places as Pep Guardiola found himself with two new defenders, a new midfielder and a new forward.

So who's made the right decision? We imagine Liverpool and Arsenal, honestly, as it's difficult to remember a mid-season overhaul that truly worked.

Even last summer, the Reds went with consistency and known quantities as Federico Chiesa was the only addition to the squad. The belief that major transfers aren't necessarily better than no transfers is something that's served Liverpool well in the past.

It has done again this season, too. But no one should expect that to be the plan later in the year.

Liverpool's summer plans

Fabrizio Romano addressed the lack of transfers at Liverpool on YouTube. During a deadline-day stream, Romano was adamant that the Reds would be 'really busy' this summer.

"Liverpool, nothing for this January window but another club that will be really busy in the summer," he explained. "Liverpool and Arsenal, I know the fans maybe aren't excited for this January was quiet.

"But in the summer [things] will be different."

Now, you probably had the same initial reaction as us with that: this is what Liverpool claim every year and then very little happens. It's easy to assume the same.

But it feels as though they have little choice in 2025. Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all leaving as things stand. There are at least seven first-team players who could depart in the summer and that figure is arguably much higher.
