Liverpool get £64m boost as Fabrizio Romano confirms move
Fabrizio Romano has just confirmed a major £64m deal that will give a huge boost to Liverpool's transfer hopes.
Liverpool FC News Today: Reds one step closer to Kerkez deal as target comes clean on Anfield visit
The Reds haven't been very active in the January market so far. Although had things turned out in another way they could have been.
Anfield Watch exclusively reported that Saudi clubs were interested in Darwin Nunez and the Reds had rejected an extraordinary £70m offer.
At the time, there was an expectation that Nunez could leave the club. However, Diogo Jota subsequently suffered an injury and Nunez scored a brace against Brentford.
This has meant Liverpool in the end were ultimately forced to keep Nunez and not disrupt Arne Slot's squad harmony for the remainder of the season.
But that doesn't mean the saga is over and a £64m deal would suggest this is just the beginning.
Fabrizio Romano confirms £64m Saudi deal
Some might have thought Saudi Arabian clubs have given up on their domination of world football. However, that's far from the truth based on the activity that has been going on this window.
The Saudis are back to completing big deals once again, including possibly one of the biggest of the January window. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Jhon Duran will be moving to Al Nassr for an initial €77m fixed rate with more add-ons.
That's roughly £64m, which is a staggering amount to pay for a footballer who isn't really even a Premier League start yet. But while this jaw-dropping money will concern some, for Liverpool this is a boost.
It shows Edwards and his recruitment team were right to reject Al Hilal's £70m offer for Nunez. Because if Duran is worth £64m, a player with years of consistently scoring in the Champions League is definitely worth more than just £70m.
Al Hilal will be competing in the Club World Cup later this year. They won't have given up on their pursuit of the Uruguayan and they will be back for his services.
Seeing what Aston Villa were able to get for Duran now gives the Reds a benchmark of what they could possibly hope to get for Nunez.
And at this stage £85m, which is around the fee Liverpool would be open to letting their star forward go, sounds about right.
There is no denying if that deal does get done, the Reds will be over the moon to have shifted an asset in Nunez who doesn't seem to quite fit into what Slot is looking for in an attacker.
But at the same time just because Nunez doesn't fit into Liverpool's plans, it doesn't mean he is not an asset.
Arguably, he's a bigger asset than Duran, which is why seeing the staggering amount Al Nassr paid for the Colombian Liverpool will be boosted by the notion that they can rack up even more dough for Nunez.
