Liverpool are set for a summer of sweeping recruitment changes when the season ends.

Three players are still at risk of leaving because their contracts are expiring, while others are playing on borrowed time, having shown that they aren't at the level that the club expects of them.

'Lookman will leave Atalanta in the summer'

The newly crowned African player of the year has been in the headlines this week after Atalanta were knocked out of the Champions League by Club Brugge.

Despite his best efforts, scoring in the second leg of the tie, he couldn't quite get his team over the line, as they went on to lose 5-2 on aggregate.

While it may not have made a difference to the overall result of the contest, he missed a penalty in the 61st minute, which was highly criticised by his manager Gian Piero Gasperini - who called him one of the worst penalty takers he's ever seen.

Nonetheless, the unfortunate performance on his record should not shy away from the remarkable season the Nigerian is having, with 17 goals and seven assists to his name across all competitions.

Just a few days ago, it was reported that Liverpool have held talks over a move for the player, although whether these talks were with the club or his representatives is unknown.

But it was clear that Liverpool admire his skillset and that he will be someone who is on the club's shortlist when it comes to assessing the futures of some of the Reds' attackers.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now added an extra layer of speculation, clarifying in his latest update that a move for Lookman is incredibly likely.

He said: "My understanding is that Lookman will leave Atalanta in the summer.

"He already had the possibility to leave one year ago, but then Atalanta decided to sell Koopmeiners, so Lookman was not leaving anymore.

But now, in summer 2025, Lookman will go."

While Liverpool are not name-dropped by Fabrizio as a team who are targeting him, it was clarified that there has been interest from Premier League clubs and the other reports help puzzle together the overall story that the Reds might have a no forward firmly in their sights.

His reported fee is around €60m (£50m), which would likely be covered by the sale of a player such as Luis Diaz or Darwin Núñez, who are each currently touted to leave the club in the summer are disappointing campaigns.

So even though it may appear externally that Richard Hughes and Liverpool's recruitment team have been relatively ineffective so far, it is clear that work is happening behind the scenes and decisions are already being made regarding the summer transfer window.
