Liverpool have enjoyed significant success in selling off their youth and fringe players in recent seasons.

Players likes Harry Wilson, Neco Williams and Rhian Brewster have all left the club in multi-million deals without having made much of an impact in the first team.

And that trend continued last summer with the sales of Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho to Brentford. The Reds could end up banking around £60 million for the pair if certain targets and add-ons are met.

That would represent excellent business for FSG, who used the outlay paid by the Bees to pay for Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa in the summer transfer window.

Van den Berg, 23, has been quietly impressive during his first season in West London, earning transfer links to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Fabio Carvalho's nightmare Brentford deal

For Carvalho however it’s been far more frustrating. The 22-year-old has totalled only THREE Premier League starts to date, failing to dislodge Mikkel Damsgaard in Thomas Frank’s attack.

The Portuguese has scored only twice and added one assist all season long. And now comes the news that the former RB Leipzig and Hull City loanee could be out for the season with a dislocated shoulder.

Carvalho was already struggling with a shoulder injury but aggravated the knock in training, reports the Hounslow Herald.

It is expected that he will miss the next two months and Brentford are hoping that he might well make it back in time for their final two games of the season.

He’s undergone surgery on the injury already and any momentum Carvalho was threatening to pick up as a result of a goal off the bench against Leicester has now surely ended.

Brentford listened to loan offers for the playmaker in January but were ultimately unwilling to give up on the former Fulham man at that time.

Thomas Frank’s side paid an initial £22.5 million - described as a ‘robbery’ - for Carvalho but his eight months at the Gtech Community Stadium have only provided a tale of frustration so far.
