Has Liverpool's goalkeeping coach DISCOVERED the Reds' next signing?

Liverpool faced wholescale change behind the scenes at the club last summer. Out went Jurgen Klopp, after nearly nine years in charge, and several of his first-team staff members left too.

Among them was long-serving goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, who moved to Saudi Arabia to link up with Steven Gerrard at Al Ettifaq.

His goalkeeping coach role was given to Fabian Otte, who joined from the United States men’s national team upon the conclusion of the Copa America last summer.

Liverpool find new goalkeeper in Gladbach

But the German previously held a similar role at Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga and his experience with the Foals could be about to pay dividends for the Reds in the transfer market.

According to BILD, Liverpool have identified current Gladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas as a potential signing. No doubt the influence of Otte will have played a part in spotting Nicolas, who worked alongside the Liverpool coach during his time at the club.

Indeed, Nicolas’ ascent has been meteoric since working with Otte. He was playing in the Dutch second tier for Roda JC as recently as the 2022/23 season but has since established himself at his hometown club.

The 27-year-old took over from captain Jonan Omlin after an injury early in the 2023/24 season, retaining his place for most of the campaign.

Although he was back on the bench for the start of the 2024/25 season, he was again summoned to take over early this term - with the former Germany under-21 international going on to impress once again.

Liverpool watching Moritz Nicolas

Sadly, an adductor injury in February ended his season early and he will play no part again for Gladbach this term. He is under contract until 2029 but BILD suggests that Liverpool are monitoring the talent nonetheless.

“Liverpool have cast an eye on Monchengladbach keeper Moritz Nicolas - despite his muscle injury,” the report states. “Former Monchengladbach goalkeeping trainer Fabian Otte is now with Liverpool.

“Monchengladbach’s sporting director has previously extended Nicolas‘s contract until 2029.”

The Reds are set for a summer goalkeeping shakeup. Giorgi Mamardashvili comes in from Valencia to put pressure on Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to leave.

Third-choice goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, meanwhile, is out of contract. There could well be a window of opportunity for the unheralded Nicolas to stake a claim should Liverpool press on with his signing.
