Liverpool rejected Joe Gomez transfer enquiry from 'big six' rival in January
Liverpool received a transfer 'enquiry' from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window.
Now Liverpool's longest-serving first-team player, Gomez has made over 200 appearances for the Reds in all competitions since his move from Charlton back in the summer of 2015.
While not always seen as first-choice, the versatile defender has made a crucial contribution to Liverpool's season in 2023/24, filling in across the backline as well as in defensive midfield amid the ongoing injury crisis at Anfield.
Gomez's attributes even led to an 'enquiry' from Tottenham in January, according to the Daily Mail.
With their own defensive options depleted after injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Spurs were on the lookout for further additions who could add squad depth during the mid-season window, while the club ultimately signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa.
Though the Mail's report doesn't provide any further detail on Spurs' interest in Gomez, it's safe to assume the approach was dismissed out of hand.
Gomez is Liverpool's 'life saver'
The 26-year-old has played a key role for Liverpool this season, making 37 appearances in all competitions so far — already the second-most of any campaign in his career.
Speaking after the FA Cup fifth-round win over Southampton, in which Gomez played as a holding midfielder, Jurgen Klopp singled the No. 2 out for special praise.
The manager said: “Joe Gomez saved our lives until now 20 times and the kids kept us in the competition. We can talk about the [academy] boys for the next four hours if you want but the real story today, besides the goals, is actually Joe Gomez.
“For the first time on that position, in the middle of the park with chaos around him because nothing was settled, I couldn’t respect it more.”
Reds captain Virgil van Dijk has also underlined the underrated role of Gomez this season, calling his long-time teammate 'one of the players of the season'.
He said: “I'm just pleased for him and knowing what we have been through together a couple of years ago. And for him to be playing on that level is something he should get maybe more credit for.
“But he is a very close friend of mine and he is a very good player and has been outstanding. Maybe one of the players of the season this year.”
Gomez is under contract at Liverpool until 2027.
