Liverpool set to LOSE 'coach on the pitch' in latest deal

Liverpool’s academy has been a notable bright spark in a season that’s been full of positivity.

In and amongst the world-beating performances by the first team have been high-level displays by Tyler Morton, Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha, James McConnell and Jayden Danns, amongst others.

And there’s been a fine utilisation of the loan market too, with players like Ben Doak, Lewis Koumas and Owen Beck all reaping rewards at their stints in the Championship.

Corness joins Gillingham

Jayden Danns was a notable newest mover in the January transfer window, heading to Sunderland on loan as the Black Cats look for an automatic promotion push to the Premier League.

And another youngster is heading into the professional scene - Dominic Corness has headed to League Two side Gillingham.

Corness has been a commanding defensive midfielder for Liverpool’s under-21 side this season, appearing in the first eight games and captaining the side twice. He also featured in three games in the EFL Cup, bagging five goal involvements across all competitions.

He spent most of last season on loan at Swiss side Yverdon-Sport in just their fourth-ever stint in the top flight of Swiss football. Corness grew into the season as it went on, including getting himself an assist in a famous 3-2 win over FC Zurich late in the season.

'Coach on the pitch'

He then came to enjoy some time in Arne Slot’s first-team pre-season tour before settling back into life in the under-21’s.

“Sometimes having a few coaches on the pitch helps as well, and Dom [Corness] is certainly one of them, he has got a great appreciation of the game.” said head coach Barry Lewtas after Corness scored to help the under-21’s to a 3-1 win over Manchester City on the opening day of the season.

He goes to a Gillingham side that sit 18th in League Two at time of writing. Whilst they remain nine points ahead of the relegation zone, the rate of matches in the league means that things could turn in an instant.

The Gills are without a win in eight games, having last beaten MK Dons 1-0 on 14th December. They will need this solidity and wiseness-beyond-his-years if they are to establish some good form in the second half of the season.
