Liverpool are ready to sign a new left-back in the summer transfer window. And that would necessitate either Andy Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas moving on.

That’s according to David Ornstein, the Athletic’s transfer expert, who also says that two of Liverpool’s preferred targets are now off-limits.

The Reds had been linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies - both of whom ended up signing new deals at their current clubs.

Several Premier League targets have been linked with a move to Anfield, including Rayan Ait-Nouri of Wolves and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson. But perhaps the prime candidate for a new left-back role on Merseyside is Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

Ornstein: Kerkez 'a strong option' for Liverpool

The 21-year-old has been in sensational form this season for the Cherries and looks set for the next step in his career. However, with the Hungary international under contract until 2028, he won’t come cheap and the club are likely to face competition for his signature.

Described by Ornstein as a ‘strong’ option, Kerkez’s arrival would mean either Robertson or Tsikimas being offloaded.

“They will have a shortlist or potential targets, obviously,” he wrote. “The likes of Nuno Mendes and Alphonso Davies were highly thought of at Anfield but both have now signed new contracts.

“Kerkez was and remains a strong option, who Bournemouth will be open to doing business for if their financial expectations are met.

“This one definitely stands a chance but the price is likely to be above what Liverpool would normally pay for a full-back - plus I'm sure like they will have other options, he will have multiple suitors - so we'll have to see how it develops.

“Don't forget they already have two top level left-backs in AR and KT so you imagine one of them will need to go if another senior player is to arrive in that position.”

Kerkez has played 29 times in the Premier League this season, scoring twice and adding five assists. The former AC Milan youth player has emerged as one of the strongest left-backs in the league since arriving from AZ in summer 2023.

He was signed by current sporting director Richard Hughes and the Reds will be hoping the pair’s previous relationship will smooth over any negotiations.
