There is strong interest in Saudi Arabia for Nunez as Anfield Watch revealed last month.
It makes sense for the Reds to cash in on the Uruguayan. He hasn't quite established himself as the star he was supposed to become and has fallen down the pecking order under Arne Slot.
Recently, Slot described he wants his no.9 to be both a goal-scorer and a creator. That clearly isn't Nunez but it could be someone else.
Why Joao Pedro is the perfect replacement for Nunez
On Anfield Watch's YouTube channel, editors Bence Bocsak and Peter Staunton sat down to discuss who might be the perfect replacement for Nunez.
Among the candidates discussed were the likes of Alexander Isak, Jonathan David, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko. All of whom have been linked with the club in the past and who fit the profile to some extent of what Slot might be looking for.
But in the discussion, it was not the aforementioned quadruple who came out on top but instead another South American star with Joao Pedro emerging as the perfect candidate for the role.
Pedro has been on Liverpool's radar since breaking out as a star at Fluminense. He has caught the eye with his performances in the Premier League and the Championship.
A brilliant link-up player, he also scores goals, takes penalties and is very much in the same mould as Roberto Firmino. Football Transfers values him at €61m, which is probably a lot more the Reds will have to pay for him but it could be money well spent.
"Well, he's under contract for another three years. So that's 2028. And assuming that he sees himself at a higher level, he's not going to renew. So you're looking at a 23 year old with three years left on his contract," Staunton said on the Anfield Watch YouTube channel.
"Brighton will feel reasonably be well protected in this coming summer, given what they got for Caicedo, which was a hundred million, I would say that's probably the benchmark that they're going to set.
"But at the end of the day, if Liverpool see him as the guy who's going to, you know, lead them to success over the course of the next five to eight years, I think if they could do a reasonable deal and a reasonable deal for me would probably be about 80 million.
"If they could do a deal around that price, then I think that for me, Joe Pedro is the one is. He is the way to go because I think the Premier League factor's huge, as you mentioned. I think he's had what, two full seasons in the Premier League? But he's also played Championship as well, you know, so he has served in the school of hard knocks, he knows what English football is about.
"There's no period of adaptation there. I just think when you re speaking about a Firmino type fit. For me, it's Joao Pedro. That's who I'd like Liverpool to sign as their next centre forward."
Pedro just makes sense as Liverpool heir to Nunez's throne. He would be a much better fit for what Slot wants in his attackers and he could fit in really well alongside the Reds' other attacking options.
