The poor form of the Reds’ No.9 has left many wondering why the club didn’t cash in when they received an offer from Saudi Arabia in January, as was exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch at the time.

Nunez would have been hard to replace in the winter window, but there is one player who moved last month that Liverpool didn’t consider, and he is absolutely excelling at his new club.

Why didn’t Liverpool sign Randal Kolo Muani in January?

Although there weren’t tonnes of options the Reds could have moved for if they did chose to cash in on Nunez and replace him, Randal Kolo Muani was definitely available.

The Frenchman, who arrived in Paris for €95 million in 2023, had only made PSG’s starting XI twice before he joined Juventus on loan in January and Liverpool were reportedly interested in him but didn’t pull the trigger on a move.

Since he arrived in Turin, Kolo Muani has scored five goals and provided one assist in just four Serie A matches.

The continued struggles of Nunez, combined with Kolo Muani’s fine form, will leave some Liverpool supporters puzzled as to why the club didn’t act in the January window.

The 26-year-old had only scored twice and provided one assist in 10 appearances in the first half of the season for PSG, so his current form at Juventus has come as a bit of a surprise to be fair.

What’s next for Liverpool’s number 9?

This summer is set to be a big one at Anfield. Liverpool are preparing for a huge squad overhaul, with a specific focus on the front line, and Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are all being lined up for summer moves, as Anfield Watch exclusively revealed.

Although Kolo Muani could once again be available in the summer, and may well be on the Reds’ radar, there are a number of names being linked with a move to Anfield.

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak has been excellent this season, and as a result he is high on Liverpool’s wish list. Joao Pedro of Brighton is another player who is reportedly being considered by the club.

It seems increasingly clear that Darwin won’t be leading the line for Liverpool next season, but many supporters will be left wondering what could’ve been if the Reds had cashed in on the Uruguayan and put their trust in Kolo Muani for the rest of the season.
