Another player in that category is Rhian Brewster although it now appears that the deal which took the forward from Anfield to Sheffield United might not have been as good as first reported.

The now 24-year-old joined the Blades back in 2020 for a fee reported to be a club-record £23.5 million plus bonuses and add-ons. It was seen as a big fee for an unproven youngster and Brewster has struggled to make an impact at Bramall Lane since.

He has scored seven goals in just over 100 games for Chris Wilder’s side, including two strikes this season.

The ex-Chelsea frontman has been unavailable for long spells due to injury but, despite those setbacks, Brewster retains the backing of his manager.

Brewster fee 'nowhere near' £23m

Wilder confirmed that Brewster was in talks with the club over a new contract, adding that he would love to see him stay and get a strong run of games.

However, he did add the intriguing detail that Brewster completed his transfer to Sheffield United for “nowhere near” the price quoted.

“We're in discussions with Rhian and his representatives. I'd love him to stay. I'm a big fan. I don't go along with what people say. The boy didn't want to get injured,” he told The Star.

“I've talked about that before but he's having a run of games and being fit and healthy, he's part of a front group which I'm delighted to have. We have real options now. Rhian starting and coming off the bench is a fabulous one and I'd love him to get that deal sorted out. His agent's talking to the club and hopefully we can come to some sort of agreement and arrangement.

“Sheffield United have not seen the best of Rhian, through situations that have not been his doing for the majority of the time. He understands there's pressure on him, that comes with a big price tag although it wasn't as big as everyone once said it was. It was nowhere near £23m but he came with big expectations but he's still got to prove he is still the player he was then.

“He's desperately trying to do that, he's an incredibly positive and popular member of the group and we love working with him. And I think everyone internally will be delighted if he continues on the path he is and raising his game and being a massive asset for us.”

Brewster appeared only four times in the first team for Liverpool and never in the Premier League. He was nonetheless on the bench for the 2019 Champions League final victory, earning a medal despite not playing.
