A head of recruitment expressed his delight after securing a surprising move for a Liverpool wonderkid.

With a busy deadline day for the Reds seeing no fewer than five separate departures on the penultimate day of August, a whole host of young faces should be able to earn a wealth of playing time away from Anfield this season.

Whilst the most attention-grabbing of these loan moves was undoubtedly Stefan Bajcetic’s move to RB Salzburg, there was one move which was overwhelming welcomed by a fellow club’s head of recruitment.

It had been expected that Ben Doak would be moving to Hull City after receiving seven loan offers from a variety of Championship clubs, and it came as a great surprise to see confirmation instead that he would be playing his football with Middlesbrough this season.

Middlesbrough’s head of recruitment Chris Jones shared on social media just how pleased he was to secure the temporary services of Doak for the year, neatly summing up how he felt to land the young Scottish winger even for one season.

Hopes have been high for Doak after consistently eye-catching cameos when he has received the albeit understandably limited playing time for the Liverpool first team, making his debut under Jürgen Klopp in the League cup just two days shy of his 17th birthday.

Doak’s playing time during the 2023/24 season was limited on account of knee surgery he underwent in December of last year, although he was still named in Scotland’s provisional squad for Euro 2024, sadly having to pull out through injury.

If Doak can stay fit and get regular playing time, both Liverpool and Middlesbrough could reap the rewards of a successful Championship loan in a manner similar to when Harvey Elliott was at Blackburn Rovers in the 2020/21 campaign.
