Darwin Nunez - a player who has created debate, controversy and frustration ever since he arrived on Merseyside - looks almost certain to be headed out of the door this summer.

Having arrived three years ago from Benfica for £85m, the weight of expectation on his shoulders was like nothing this club has ever seen, and it has quickly become clear that he isn't good enough.

In crunch moments, you can sometimes rely on him to deliver a piece of brilliance; occasionally, you'll see him step up when you least expect him to; but on a regular basis, he under delivers.

This season, even his work-rate has been criticised by Arne Slot, and that was usually the attribute you could always guarantee you'd see from Nunez - giving his everything for the badge.

But it seems as though we've reached the point of no return now. His Liverpool career is done and the best thing for all parties this summer is to offload him for a respectable fee, at a club where he can finally flourish and become the player we all hoped he could be.

Atletico Madrid prepare an approach for Nunez

Reports from Fichajes have clarified claims that Nunez's future at Liverpool is done.

Anfield Watch was already aware that the Uruguayan's place with the Reds would be assessed, alongside Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, when the season comes to an end.

However, the question of where he might go still remained unanswered.

It was reported just a few days ago that while Atletico were interested in a potential deal, they were working to extend Antoinne Griezmann's contract - a move which signified to most that a striker was not going to be on their shopping list this summer.

Although a contrasting report from Todo Fichajes has now added a further twist to the tale.

The latest intel from the Spanish news outlet is that a deal for Nunez is still very much on the table.

Atletico value the player highly, claiming "[he] can be a bet for the present and the future, fitting perfectly with the profile of a physical striker..."

However, the £85m that Liverpool are looking to recoup is not possible. The offer is a loan deal, perhaps with an obligation to buy for 50m (£42m).

It is worth noting that the report adds, "the final price could rise is a bid is generated, although from the player's perspective, the red and white sports project is looked on favourably."

As such, it seems as though the pair could be made each other. Nunez's dogged hunger for the ball has always made him an asset that would fit well in a Diego Simeone system and the striker's countryman Luis Suarez would be a big fan of the move, as the two would share a similar career trajectory.

The money Liverpool would take from the deal would signify the saga as one of the worst Liverpool have ever got themselves into, although it is clear that mistakes were made and they come at a cost.
