Liverpool DON'T see 'huge disappointment' in their collapsed Anthony Gordon deal

Liverpool don’t see ‘huge disappointment’ in their collapsed £75m deal earlier this summer. The Reds saw things fall apart at the death.

Liverpool haven't had a productive summer in the transfer market. We feel that's safe to say.

Most recently, they saw a deal for Martin Zubimendi completely fall apart as the midfielder changed his mind and decided to remain with Real Sociedad. It was a real blow for the Reds, who hoped to secure the missing puzzle piece in midfield.

Sociedad did what they could to convince their homegrown talent to stay - and were successful.

But it's not the only time that a deal fell apart at the death. Liverpool very nearly signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United at the end of June, only for things to swing away from them.

The deal would have cost £75m, with Joe Gomez counting for £45m of that. The problem is that this deal only came about because Newcastle needed funds to meet Premier League spending rules before the start of July.

They were able to secure those funds through other sales, meaning they no longer had any need to sell one of their star players. Gordon was suddenly off the table and the Reds moved on.

Liverpool's stance on Gordon

The Liverpool Echo claims that despite such a massive deal collapsing, the club don't really view it as a 'huge disappointment'. This was always a push to sign someone because the opportunity suddenly arose, rather than there being any real need for Gordon.

And it's easy to see that position. Liverpool have a plethora of left-wingers at the club and Gordon would have been a true luxury.

But a month-and-a-half on, the Reds still haven't signed anyone this summer and the Gordon deal collapsing feels more and more disappointing. Certainly from a fan's point of view, anyway.

The club, though, appear pretty content to stick with what they have.
