At Liverpool it’s no different.

The Reds’ women’s team haven’t been having the easiest time in this campaign and could therefore do with a mid-season boost.

Matt Beard’s side went into the Women’s Super League winter break with only two wins from their first 10 matches. They finished 2024 with four consecutive league losses - including a 4-0 drubbing to Manchester United and a defeat to local rivals Everton.

The Reds sit eighth in the 12-team league with only nine points.

Accordingly some fresh blood was required in January with injuries having devastated the side during the first half of the season. And the club have secured an impressive signing in the form of Bayern Munich midfielder Sam Kerr.

Liverpool sign Sam Kerr

The Scottish international moved to Bayern from Rangers in summer 2023 but has only managed two starts in Germany all season long.

Competition is fierce in the Bayern midfield - where Lionesses mainstay Georgia Stanway is a key figure - and Kerr has had to look elsewhere for first-team minutes.

And when Liverpool’s club social accounts put out the announcement that Sam Kerr had signed, it sparked unprecedented enthusiasm from supporters.

That's because some fans thought that Liverpool had signed the OTHER Sam Kerr - one of the world’s best players and a club legend at Chelsea.

The Australia international is among the most recognisable female athletes on the planet and has scooped up a host of team and individual honours throughout her long, illustrious career.

Kerr, 31, has been on the Ballon d’Or Feminin podium three times - finishing behind Spaniards Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati. She has also won FIVE WSL titles with the Blues, among mountains of other honours.

“my heart dropped,” wrote one fan about the signing on X, formerly Twitter. “Almost won the January transfer window right there,” said another.

Chelsea’s Kerr remains on the sidelines having suffered a career-disrupting ACL injury in January 2024.

She is not expected back until later in 2025 with Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor telling the BBC in December: "We are looking to have her back with us in February, March, not before that.”

Despite the loss of Kerr, the Blues are again streaking ahead in the WSL table. They have won nine of their 10 games so far, with one draw against Leicester the only blemish on their record.
