Trent Alexander-Arnold is unquestionably the highest-profile sale. That one, though, wasn't even meant to be a sale and the fact that it was is quite remarkable.

Alexander-Arnold's contract was expiring this summer but Liverpool managed to sell the final month of it to Real Madrid for around £10m. It's a quite remarkable deal and an unprecedented one brought about by the FIFA Club World Cup.

Caoimhin Kelleher is another who's left the club, joining Brentford in a deal everyone saw coming. The Irish international fully deserves to be a regular no.1 at a Premier League club - now he gets that chance.

The exits certainly won't stop there, either. Jarell Quansah is going to join Bayer Leverkusen shortly. Liverpool and Leverkusen are just waiting on his commitments with England's Under 21 team to end as they aim to win the UEFA European Championships.

Darwin Nunez is another we all expect to depart. Napoli are clear favourites there, though we'll see if any twists happen.

After all, there's already been one transfer twist, with a Liverpool legend now looking likely to stay.

Andy Robertson to Atletico Madrid

Andy Robertson has been strongly linked with Atletico Madrid in recent weeks. The Scot is in the final year of his Liverpool contract and the Spanish giants are reportedly hoping to add him to take advantage of that with a cut-price deal.

Robertson, too, is said to have been eager for the move. Liverpool's pursuit of Milos Kerkez, with the deal confirmed on Thursday, brings enormous competition for him to hold onto his spot.

Atletico were offering a new challenge and confirmed regular football. It's easy to see why Robertson would jump at the chance, honestly.

But there's been a twist. Fabrizio Romano confirms that Atletico are now signing Mattero Ruggeri from Atalanta - a player they've chosen over Robertson.

The 22-year-old Italian will complete a medical with Atletico and complete a deal, leaving Robertson on Merseyside. It really, really appeared that he'd be leaving Liverpool so this is a genuine surprise here.

But a welcome one. Liverpool could use Robertson's experience as Kerkez adapts - we imagine he'll be a really key presence next season.
