Liverpool have been tipped to go into the market sooner or later for a new left-back.

Andy Robertson is an all-time club legend but is beginning to show signs of wear and tear. He will be 31 before the season is out and is no longer the nailed-on first-choice he was under Jurgen Klopp.

Understudy Kostas Tsimikas had been reliable when called upon this season but it’s doubtful the 28-year-old is the long-term solution in the position.

Accordingly, the club have been linked with more left-backs over the last couple of transfer windows than perhaps any other position. Milos Kerkez, Patrick Dorgu and Rayan Ait-Nouri are just some of the names linked with a potential Merseyside arrival.

With the asking price for Kerkez spiralling to a reported £50 million, owners FSG and sporting director Richard Hughes might have to resort to looking for budget options. And the solution to their impending left-back dilemma could already be at hand.

Scanlon on loan at Millwall

Calum Scanlon joined Liverpool from Birmingham City back in 2020, working his way up through the youth ranks and eventually making his first-team debut under Klopp last season during a 5-1 Europa League win against Toulouse.

He spent time in and around the first-team squad when Robertson was injured and signed a new long-term contract back in April 2024. Last summer, the 19-year-old was sent out on loan to Millwall in the Championship but disaster struck shortly after signing.

He suffered a stress fracture to his back, ruling him out for the long term, and he returned to Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre for treatment. Once recovered, Scanlon didn’t see his loan spell curtailed, he instead went back to the Den where he has recently recommenced first-team duties.

Scanlon back in contention

Last weekend he played around an hour against Hull City, putting in an excellent performance, and he capped that off with the first senior goal of his career on Tuesday night.

Playing in a more advanced left-wing role, he lashed home a near-post, left-footed strike as Millwall went 1-0 up on Cardiff. The Lions extended their lead before half-time but Cardiff pegged them back, earning a 2-2 draw at the death.

Scanlon was off by that stage with the Millwall manager Alex Neil taking no risks at this stage with his fitness.

He is demonstrating the right trajectory, however, and a solid six months could see him come into the reckoning to replace Robbo - just like fellow academy graduate Conor Bradley has done on the right side with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future in increasing doubt.
