Liverpool have been given a boost in their chase for No1 striking target Alexander Isak.

Isak, 25, has emerged on the radar of both Liverpool and Arsenal in recent months with his current club Newcastle reportedly placing a £150 million price tag on his signature.

The Swede has been in imperious form for the Magpies this season, scoring 19 times and adding five assists in the Premier League. Having joined from Real Sociedad in 2022 for around £63m, it has been speculated that he could end up leaving the North East this summer.

EXCLUSIVE: The inside story on Dominik Szoboszlai's move to Liverpool

Stefan Borson, a former Manchester City financial advisor, has told Football Insider, that despite the high cost of the operation involved that both Liverpool and Arsenal could afford to sign Isak this summer.

It means the Reds wouldn’t be priced out of a move for Isak should they decide to move for him and any attempt to sign the former Borussia Dortmund man would fit within PSR parameters.

Expert says Liverpool CAN afford Isak

“Liverpool and Arsenal could afford it from a PSR perspective,” Borson said. “Neither of them will necessarily have the cash available, but that can be put in by the ownership groups. I think both deals are unlikely, to be honest.

“It would be a very major signing for it to happen. I would think it’d be more than £120million as well. Newcastle are unlikely to want to sell, even if the player would want to go.

“I think that the price that was paid would have to be such that it really accelerated Newcastle’s development elsewhere with the profit that they made from that transaction.

“He’s probably going to have a book value of about £30million by the end of the season, something like that given what he was bought for. The profit would be significant, but would it be significant enough for them to really be keen to do it?”

Newcastle are currently in a clamour for Champions League football along with a clutch of other clubs. They are currently ninth, awaiting their game versus West Ham on Monday night.

If they fail to gain qualification for the Champions League then we could see Isak on his way.

“I suspect that, if they get the Champions League qualification, then the chances of that happening fall considerably because they just don’t think anybody’s going to pay £140-150million,” Borson says.

So not only will Liverpool be hoping they can beat Newcastle in the EFL Cup final, but that they miss out on the Champions League in order to facilitate a deal for Isak.
