Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak has been consistently linked with a move to Liverpool. Here's the latest.

Liverpool are in the market for a new forward this summer. Though, they're actually in the market for several.

Anfield Watch understands that a major overhaul of the forward line is on the way. Liverpool want to give Arne Slot the attack that suits him, rather than having him make do with Jurgen Klopp's.

Of course, Liverpool didn't expect him to actually go and win the league with this set of forwards. That's just a happy surprise in what should have been a transitional season.

But Liverpool want to reboot the squad a little in 2025. The forwards are at the front of that, as are any necessary additions after the major contract situations are sorted.

And one name that keeps popping up at the moment is Alexander Isak. He's apparently on the Anfield shortlist - the big-name forward who could carry Liverpool onwards for the foreseeable future.

Now, we do have some hesitancy when it comes to going all-in on the Swede. It can't be denied, though, that he's a truly elite talent and one we'd love to see at the club.

Just for the right price.

Ornstein's Isak update

The Athletic's David Ornstein commented on Liverpool's pursuit of Isak this week in a Q&A. He made it clear: the Reds like him but won't devote their summer to him.

"Liverpool aren’t alone in liking the Swede," he explained. "We know Mikel Arteta wants to sign him, Chelsea and Barcelona have also been linked, and I’m sure many other sides would be keen, too, if the opportunity arose.

"But that’s a big ‘if’. Newcastle have no intention of selling their best player and, understandably, don’t welcome this kind of conversation. Isak has more than three years left on his existing contract, he is very well paid, and there’s no financial requirement for the St James’ Park hierarchy to cash in.

"Now, every player has their price and while I’m not aware of Newcastle specifically setting one for Isak, the number that seems to circulate around the industry is something like £150million. Perhaps if teams are prepared to make such eye-watering offers there’s a conversation to be had, but Newcastle hold the aces here and their plan will be to build with, rather than without, him.

"Liverpool are only going to consider making a move if Isak is genuinely available; they’re not the type of club to engage in a wild goose chase."

This is what we want to hear. Liverpool want Isak but don't believe he's the be-all and end-all. If they can sign him they will, otherwise they'll move on.

It suggests we'll actually find out if this is happening quite quickly into the window, maybe even before it opens. And if Newcastle won't sell, then it's on to new targets.

That last bit is the important factor here. Liverpool can't spend an age trying to get Isak, lose out, and then find alternatives are off the menu.

So as far as we're concerned, this is the exact news we wanted to hear. This summer has to be a success - and Liverpool will make sure of it.
