Liverpool are increasingly confident that Alexander Isak will make the switch to Anfield in the summer, but what does that mean for the Reds’ current no.9?

A huge offer from Saudi Arabia for the Uruguayan striker was rejected by the club in January, as exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch, and a summer exit has been spoken about ever since.

Now, as Liverpool get closer to signing their number one target in Nunez’s position, it looks like the writing is on the wall for the 25-year-old.

Isak interest all but confirms Nunez departure

Liverpool are not a club that often spends big without receiving significant transfer fees first.

Isak is one of the most sought-after players in world football at the moment and he will come at a massive cost, so the Reds will need to make some sales to balance the books if he does sign.

A new report from GIVEMESPORT has revealed that Liverpool are becoming increasingly confident that they will sign Isak in the summer, and private discussions have reportedly taken place about a potential £120 million deal.

As well as the finances involved in the deal pointing towards a Nunez departure, there would presumably be no place for the Uruguayan in Arne Slot’s starting XI if Isak arrives.

Why do Liverpool need a new striker?

Although the Reds are enjoying an extremely successful campaign on the pitch, with one hand already on the Premier League trophy, Slot’s strikers haven’t been pulling their weight.

Liverpool have scored 69 goals in the league this campaign, 27 of which have been scored by one man – Mohamed Salah.

The Reds’ next highest league scorer is Luis Diaz with nine goals, and Nunez and Diogo Jota have only managed five goals each.

Although Salah’s phenomenal form has carried Liverpool to Premier League success, it is not sustainable to rely on one player for 39% of your league goals – that doesn’t account for the Egyptian’s assists either.

If Liverpool want to continue to be successful and challenge for the biggest trophies, someone must be bought in to share the burden with Salah – if the Egyptian stays at Anfield – and Isak is the Reds’ top target.

The arrival of Isak will almost definitely mark the end of Nunez’s time in Merseyside, and the Uruguayan could even depart before his replacement arrives.
