It was a move that shocked the English football academy scene. It was also one which elicited a lot of excitement from Liverpool supporters.
In the modern era, it's very rare that Liverpool either lose or bring players to and from their Premier League rivals.
But that seems to be changing with one of Liverpool's forwards bound for another rival in Arsenal in what could also be a landmark move.
Cornelius Akaunu set to join Arsenal in shock move
Recently we reported that Liverpool wonderkid Cornelius Akaunu has struck an agreement with Tottenham to go on trial with the London based side. It looks like that has sparked the interest of their North London rivals with Arsenal now moving in for the player.
The Liverpool youngster has agreed to go on trial at the Gunners and recently featured in a friendly U17 fixture as part of his trial. Akaunu helped Arsenal to a 3-1 victory in that game and caught the eye of the club's scouts.
He is eligible for a scholarship deal next season and is expected to leave Liverpool after having spent over seven years at the club joining as an U9 back in 2017.
Capable of playing as a winger and as a forward, Akaunu is highly regarded at academy level. However, it seems like his future lies elsewhere, and joining the renowned Hale End academy would undoubtedly be a great move for the teenager.
With Akaunu agreeing to the trial and Arsenal scouts having been impressed by his performance, a move is definitely edging closer.
Liverpool will be disappointed to lose him, but there is already so much attacking depth at that level that Akaunu is not necessarily a massive loss.
Rio Ngumoha, Joe Bradshaw and the exciting Joshua Abe is also coming through the ranks, who are all highly thought of at academy level.
If he does leave, it's another high profile move at academy level between England's biggest clubs following on from the aforementioned Ngumoha moving to Anfield and Chido Obi-Martin joining Manchester United from Arsenal.
It's clear that young players are now thinking about their pathways very early on in their careers, which is nice to see.
Clearly, Akaunu sees his future away from the Reds, and Liverpool wish him the very best in his endeavours.
