Liverpool signing Adrien Rabiot would do Juventus a huge favour

If Liverpool were to sign French international Adrien Rabiot on a free transfer this summer, it could do Juventus a huge favour.

Liverpool’s interest in the 29-year-old has been widely discussed this summer but Tutto Mercato are now reporting that if Liverpool were to be successful in bringing Rabiot through the door they would end their interest in Teun Koopmeiners, leaving Juve with a free run at the Dutchman.

Liverpool reportedly first made contact with Rabiot two months ago and since then developments have been slow. He opted to leave Juve at the end of his contract despite the Italian giants offering him a new deal to remain.

Barcelona and Arsenal have also been linked to a move for the Frenchman but he is supposedly holding out for an offer from Champions League winners Real Madrid.

Would Rabiot fit at Liverpool?

Liverpool’s desire to sign another defensive midfielder has been no secret this window and was reaffirmed again this morning by The Athletic.

Rabiot is someone who could fill that role but may also have more to offer Liverpool.

The former PSG man is a serial winner having won seven league titles in his career among a host of other domestic and international trophies.

On top of this he has experience that Liverpool could be lacking after losing both Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip this summer, as well as their captain and vice-captain Jordan Henderson and James Milner last year.

Rabiot could add balance to Arne Slot’s fairly young Liverpool squad by bringing some valuable experience.

What about Koopmeiners?

Last week it was reported that Liverpool were likely to make a bid for Koopmeiners and Juventus are providing the biggest competition for Slot’s former captain.

Koopmeiners would come at a much greater cost than Rabiot, with his contract at Atalanta running until 2027 but he is three years younger than Rabiot.

Koopmeiners would also add valuable experience to Liverpool and has worked as a captain under Slot before.

The two men have fairly comparable injury records, with both picking up a few minor injuries throughout last season.

If reports are to be believed and only one of these players will be heading through the door at Anfield then Richard Hughes and Slot have a tough decision to make.
