Kevin De Bruyne's departure from Manchester City has definitely come as a surprise but it could be good news for Liverpool.

Sure, the Belgian international isn't getting any younger but he's still playing at a really high level. In years to come, Man City may come to rue their decision to allow him to leave on a free transfer.

What's next for De Bruyne is unclear. He's made it clear he doesn't want to rule out a move to another Premier League team. There's even been suggestions that Liverpool could make a move for him.

The latest though seems to suggest he could be heading to another Premier League team instead.

According to Melissa Reddy, writing for Sky Sports, Aston Villa have begun internal talks about the possibility of signing the Belgian star on a free contract.

On the surface, this doesn't mean much for Liverpool but in reality it actually moves the club towards a dream transfer scenario.

Why Liverpool now closer to Morgan Rogers transfer

We wrote about how Aston Villa are closing in on a deal to sign attacking midfielder Sverre Nypan, now the suggestions that they also want to sign De Bruyne would imply that they are making plans for the future.

A future that may not involve Morgan Rogers, who Anfield Watch understands is someone Liverpool really admire and would be ready to make a move for.

If Villa sign both Nypan and De Bruyne it's pretty much inevitable that Rogers would subsequently be put on the market.

At this moment in time it looks like Aston Villa are not going to make the Champions League. Currently, based on the club's last two financial accounts, the club have lost £200m over the last two seasons.

As per the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), clubs are only permitted to be allowed losses of up to £105m during a rolling three year period.

So in order to avoid incurring financial penalties, Aston Villa might be forced into a big sale. Especially if they want to sign Marcus Rashford as well as De Bruyne and Nypan.

Selling Rogers who could be valued as much as £100m might be the only way for Villa to cut their losses,

£100m may seem excessive for Rogers but it's really not when you look at Liverpool's needs and his quality.

The Reds need more homegrown players with many likely to leave this summer, including Trent Alexander-Arnold.

They also want to add a player who can provide competition to Dominik Szoboszlai and a winger who can replace Luis Diaz.

Rogers can do both, he thrives as a no.10 but can also play as a left-winger.

He has 17 goal contributions in the Premier League this season, having scored eight goals and registered nine assists.

Across all competitions he has contributed with 27 goal contributions in total.

That's exactly the type of player Liverpool need to add to take Arne Slot's side to a new dimension.

At 22-years-old Rogers still has many more levels that he can reach before he's at the pinnacle of his game. For someone of his potential, even a fee as extortionate as £100m might be worth paying.

And if these De Bruyne talks to Aston Villa continue to gather space, the Reds will continue to close in on their man. That's why the Belgian's next move is one to keep a close eye on for Liverpool fans.
