Liverpool transfers: Fresh twist in No.6 chase as midfielder given 'clean slate'

It has been no secret over recent months that Liverpool have been looking to bolster their defensive midfield and the Reds have now been dealt another blow.

After losing out on Martin Zubimendi, it has been widely reported that the club wouldn't just sign any other player for the sake of it.

While links have been made with Adrien Rabiot and Teun Koopmeiners nothing concrete has been established.

Kimmich set to stay at Bayern

Both Liverpool and Arsenal had been heavily linked with Joshua Kimmich who was expected to leave Munich this summer after a difficult season under former Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

Now the player is set to be given the chance to impress in the midfield under new boss Vincent Kompany.

Bayern had also been linked with Rabiot but have decided to stick with their current number six for this season.

Head of Football at BILD Group Christian Falk told Caught Offside: “There were talks in the past for Adrien Rabiot back when Hasan Salihamidžić was the sports director. At the moment, this isn’t hot, as Bayern are planning with Joshua Kimmich in this position. He will return in the midfield and be handed a clean slate."

The 29-year-old has just one year left on his current deal and depending on how his season goes he could leave the Bundesliga giants on a free transfer next summer.

Where do Liverpool go next?

With just seven days left to go in the summer transfer window, it seems highly unlikely Liverpool will sign a number six.

The current solution is to play Ryan Gravenberch in the role and after his impressive display against Ispwich, it seems Arne Slot will happily stick with the Dutchman.

While the club also has Wataru Endo who could play there, he is set to have limited playing time under the new head coach.
