Liverpool are reportedly set to pursue a double deal with Feyenoord in a bid to reunite incoming manager Arne Slot with two players who formed a key part of his team in Rotterdam.

Football Insider reports that in addition to versatile defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who has been linked to the Reds in various reports, defensive midfielder Mats Wieffer is also on the Reds' radar.

Both reportedly could made the move to Anfield when Jurgen Klopp passes on the baton to the Dutchman this summer.

Who is Mats Wieffer?

Wieffer, 24, has been a stalwart in Feyenoord's midfield this season, featuring in 42 matches across various competitions.

His versatility, playing both as a holding midfielder and a centre-back, coupled with an anticipated appearance for the Netherlands at Euro 2024, had attracted interest from Liverpool and other Premier League clubs even before Slot's potential appointment.

According to a report from Fichajes, the Reds are hoping to secure a deal for the Dutchman for a fee of around €40 million.

However, the Feyenoord midfielder is also a target for Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window.

Geertruida strongly linked to Liverpool

Another key figure under Slot's tutelage has been 23-year-old Lutsharel Geertruida.

The right-back, who can also play as a centre-back and as a holding midfielder, has been linked to Liverpool ever since the Slot rumours emerged.

Featuring in 44 games this season in multiple positions, Geertruida has often donned the captain's armband having solidified himself as a leader in the dressing room at De Kuip.

Like Wieffer, he too is likely to be headed to Germany this summer with the Netherlands national team.

His recent presence among the away fans at Liverpool's 2-2 draw with West Ham United at the London Stadium further fuelled speculation about a potential move to Anfield.

Defensive reinforcements are the priority for Liverpool

Clearly, defensive reinforcement will be the priority for Liverpool this summer.

If these signings materialise, it's clear that the Reds would be gaining options for multiple positions both in the back line and in defensive midfield.

With both Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara set to depart at the end of their contracts, plus doubts over the long-term future of Wataru Endo, it's clear where the club's focus lies going into the first transfer window in the post-Klopp era.
