Liverpool fans can feel disheartened by the overall business of the summer transfer window.

Failing to secure Martin Zubimendi to fill the defensive midfield void was inexcusable and for a club of Liverpool's magnitude, it was almost embarrassing.

Of course, this failure has been beneficial with Ryan Gravenberch stepping up and slotting into the number 6 position with ease.

At the time however, it was frustrating.

But, there was light at the end of the tunnel for Reds supporters with the signing of Federico Chiesa for the low price of €10 million.

A steal for a player once considered to be worth €100 million after his heroics during the Euros in 2021.

A career plagued by injuries, this was the move that was supposed to launch his career back into the limelight. A place where he could enjoy his football and battle it out in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

But that is all just a distant pipe dream.

Chiesa’s move has been quite the opposite and now, in the depths hidden behind all the transfer business of Trent Alexander-Arnold, a report suggests that the Italian could be on his way out, 5 months after landing on Merseyside.

Napoli approach for Chiesa confirmed

Multiple reports in Italy are beginning to link the forward with a move back to his homeland.

Inter Milan, Roma, AC Milan and Napoli have all been said to be interested in gaining his services.

Calcio Mercato states that, “those who intend to bring the 27-year-old back to Italy could think of a loan, with part of the salary paid by the English club, to relaunch the player and make him regain his best physical condition.”

Foot Mercato has also reported that Chiesa is “frustrated” with his lack of opportunities under Arne Slot.

The former international wants to “revive his career after several months of alternating many physical problems that handicapped his start to his adventure at Anfield.”

A loan move would seem feasible at this point. Chiesa is clearly at the bottom of the pecking order and has only played 123 minutes all season due to injuries, illness and overall fitness. He is not up to the intensity English football possesses.

To regain confidence both mentally and physically, this transfer would benefit all parties.

And Napoli have also made direct contact with Chiesa's agent Fali Ramadani, according to a Calcio Mercato report, which states that in the next few days he "will have a meeting with Liverpool management to take stock of the situation."

An "initial exploratory contact" has been made between the Italian club and Ramadani in the past few days and the report suggests there is a willingness to move on Chiesa's part.

Salary issues

However, the problem is Chiesa’s salary is reportedly “set at around €7.5 million net per season” which hinders negotiations.

The player would therefore, as mentioned above, need to have part of his salary paid for by Liverpool before another club even consider purchasing him.

Overall, it’s a sad chapter in the history of an incredibly promising player. His goals and ambitions this season have completely faded into oblivion.

Not just as supporters, but as human beings we hope a loan move like this can rekindle his talent and he returns to Liverpool as a new man.
