Liverpool considered making an approach for RB Salzburg centre-back Oumar Solet last January, but decided against a move for the 24-year-old.

The Reds chose not to strengthen their squad in the winter despite a steady stream of injuries, with the club opting to wait until the summer transfer window before bolstering their defensive unit.

Liverpool were linked with a whole host of names, including the likes of Goncalo Inacio and Piero Hincapie, the Reds even seeing an approach for the Bayer Leverkusen defender turned down last January.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool were also considering an approach for RB Salzburg defender Oumar Solet, but chose not to make a formal offer for the highly-rated centre-back.

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Romano stated: "For Liverpool, centre-back is an important position.

"Oumar Solet from Salzburg was a possibility in January then they decided not to proceed, not to do anything in the January transfer window, to move directly in the summer.

"Now I think the priority for Liverpool will be to find the right centre-back to put some fresh energy in that position."

Solet has impressed for RB Salzburg since his move from Lyon back in 2020, even putting in a strong display against Liverpool during a pre-season friendly in 2022.

The 24-year-old has spoken about his admiration for the Premier League in the past, saying: "To play for the best teams in the world, of course [is my dream]. To be an example for young players. I just want to show my skills to the whole world.

"Since the youngest age, I've been a fan of the Premier League, but from now on, I am really open about every top league. I just want to play great games and be happy."

It will be interesting to see whether Solet's name is considered by the Reds in the summer when they step up their search for centre-back reinforcements.

Inacio and Hincapie are likely to be on the club's shortlist again in the coming window, as well as the likes of Marc Guehi and Ousmane Diomande.
