Liverpool suffer 'greatest fall' in football money rankings

Liverpool Football Club suffered the 'greatest fall' in the latest Deloitte money rankings. The Reds had a difficult season.
Deloitte have released their yearly football money rankings for the 2022/23 season. The outlet highlights how much clubs have made through matchday, commercial and broadcast revenue across a season, then ranks the top 20 accordingly.
Liverpool, as one of the world's biggest clubs, typically finish very high in these rankings. Their rise under Jurgen Klopp is a large reason for that as they've consistently competed for the biggest trophies and have made three UEFA Champions League finals.
In fact, the Reds were third in the previous rankings - only Manchester City and Real Madrid finished above them. That's unfortunately not the case this time around.
Liverpool suffered the 'greatest fall' of any club in the rankings this time around. They've dropped all the way to 7th and here's what Deloitte had to say:
"Liverpool reported the greatest fall in year-on-year rankings, moving from 3rd to 7th, and were one of three Money League clubs (alongside Atlético de Madrid and West Ham United) to report a decline in revenue in comparison to the previous season. This was due to a downturn in on-pitch results across both domestic and European competitions after the club reached three finals and finished 2nd in the league in 2021/22."The club had lifted two trophies the previous season, as well as pushed all the way to the Champions League final. That's an awful lot of money coming in that simply didn't in 2022/23.
They'll hope to correct that somewhat this year, of course, but as they're competing in the UEFA Europa League, it's pretty much impossible to climb too high. Still, a deep run in the cup competitions - and potentially a title challenge - would go a long way to going back on track.
On top of that, it highlights just how far the summer investment has gone in getting Liverpool on the right path once again.
