Liverpool need a rebuild this summer, and a significant one at that.

Despite the club purchasing a brand new midfield just two seasons ago, the squad is in need of some serious investment, as the defence has been overlooked for far too long and the attack is crumbling before our eyes.

As such, the Reds are in a bizarre position. No one expected the club to be competing for the Premier League this season, yet we are 11 points clear at the top, just a few games away from being crowned champions of England for a record equalling 20th time.

Of course last season, the team was in a three-way title race, although we sadly fell away as the season drew to a close, running out of steam. Following an unproductive summer, it seemed farcical to suggestion that Liverpool would be competitive again, but here we are.

Nonetheless, the achievements of this squad should not paper over the cracks and in order to remain competitive next season, a full-scale rebuild is required.

One forward's future at the club has just been decided as the latest reports suggest he is going to be the centre-piece of an enormous rebuild.

The Liverpool forward integral to a rebuild... at AC Milan

Anfield Watch has understood for the last few months that a serious summer clearout is expected to take place in Liverpool's forward line, with Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez is subject to an assessment before their futures are decided.

As such, it would be a little bizarre to hear that one of the Reds forwards is going to play a key part in a rebuild.

However, it's true, according to the latest reports, Federico Chiesa is highly regarded, although his admirers are over at AC Milan rather than Liverpool. The San Siro based club are looking to hire a new manager and a new sporting director this summer and they have ambitious plans.

Gazzetta claims that Chiesa is a key target for Milan, as the club look to work predominantly with Italian players as part of a rebuild to bright the side back to its roots.

Liverpool only brought the Italian to Merseyside this summer, in a last ditch attempt to bring some players through the door. Chiesa's situation at Juventus was untenable and Liverpool found a street-wise cost-effective opportunity to take advantage of.

However, now six months into his stay, it is clear that the move hasn't quite worked out.

The players' fitness has been inconsistent and when available, Arne Slot has been tentative to use him, even though he has impressed when given a chance - two goals and one assists in 398 minutes.

His contract is good until 2028 and he will be hoping to stick to his task and make a success of his time at Liverpool until he is let go, but the Reds' senior officials might already want to cut their losses.

In addition, Chiesa is struggling to get into the Italian national team, and with a World Cup lurking over the horizon in 2026, he will have a big decision to make around his future.
