Liverpool great SAVAGED as managerial horror show ends
Steven Gerrard’s time as manager of Al-Ettifaq has come to an end.
After just under 18 months in the role, Gerrard asked to step down from his role with personal reasons being cited.
Liverpool FC News Today: Barcelona hero set to leave as Trent Alexander-Arnold nears agreement
This is according to Ben Jacobs, Senior Football Correspondent at GIVEMESPORT, through a post on Twitter.
The tweet claims that Ettifaq have not sacked Gerrard, but were instead respectful of his request and proceeded to negotiate an exit package.
Gerrard’s tenure at Al-Ettifaq was, to say the least, lacklustre. He initially brought in Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and former fan favourite Gini Wijnaldum, as well as French striker Moussa Dembele, but managed only a sixth-placed finish in the 2023/24 season, with champions Al-Hilal finishing on double the amount of points.
This season is currently going even worse. Ettifaq sit in 12th place, five points off the relegation zone and 24 points back from first-placed Al-Hilal.
Ettifaq fans crucify Gerrard
The reaction to Gerrard’s departure in Saudi Arabia has been frosty at best.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Saudi pundit Nasser Al-Jedaie previously stated, “Gerrard served Al-Etiifaq outside the field, but there are no results for the technical work. What is the project Gerrard is leading?”.
And the tweets have been pouring in. @bohamad1945 wrote, “We, the Al-Ettifaq fans, demanded his departure, and he was released.” @Amjjd_11 added, “He has let us all down. We thought he was a great coach, but we discovered that he is just a cook, not a coach. Go away, you failure!”.
Yet, as @paul_c_watson said, “That’ll be a painful decision for Steven Gerrard to make, cut him and he bleeds Al-Ettifaq.”
Twitter is also alight with images of the Al-Ettifaq club badge pasted over Demba Ba capitalising on Gerrard’s fateful slip against Chelsea in the 2013/14 season.
It’s an unfortunate situation for Gerrard whose managerial career is seemingly coming apart at the seams. If he wants to remain in management then his next step has to be meticulously calculated and somewhere he can hone his own skills as much as anything.
