Stefan Bajcetic facing HUGE decision over future

One of Liverpool’s brightest young prospects, Stefan Bajcetic, hasn’t had the easiest time since he was handed his first team debut in the 2022/23 season.

The 20-year-old has suffered from multiple long-term injuries, missing almost the entirety of last season.

But this summer the young midfielder followed former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders to Austria, joining Red Bull Salzburg on a season-long loan and, after a difficult start, things are starting to improve for Bajcetic.

Widely considered as one of the brightest prospects to play for the Reds academy over the past few years, Bajcetic still has plenty of time to work his way into Arne Slot’s first team.

Bajcetic’s big decision

Although Bajcetic has played over 20 times for Liverpool’s first team, and is currently a regular starter for Salzburg, he has only made one appearance for Spain’s U21 side at international level.

He has also only made three appearances for the U18s, and he could now look to switch his allegiance to get more international experience under his belt.

According to a report by Diario AS, if Bajcetic is not called up to the next Spain U21 squad, which will be announced on Friday, then the Football Association of Serbia will try and convince him to represent Serbia rather than Spain moving forward.

Bajcetic committed his future to Spain back in December 2022, shortly after making his senior debut for Liverpool, but it now looks as though a change could be on the cards for the youngster.

Serbia can offer the midfielder senior international football, something that could be very valuable to his development, and a call up to the senior Spanish squad seems very far away if Bajcetic isn’t even selected for the U21s.

Despite the potential increase in playing time, the report from Diario AS states that Bajcetic feels a deeper connection with his country of birth, Spain, than with his father’s homeland, Serbia.

Which ever path Bajcetic choses to take, Liverpool supporters will be watching his progress keenly, hoping to one day see him lighting up the pitch at Anfield again.
