Liverpool star could do a complete 180° to REMAIN at Anfield this summer

Playing for Liverpool is a cut throat business. One day your position at the club might be safe, another day you might be at serious risk of being isolated and suggested to move on.

When it comes to young players in the academy trying to break into the first team, this reality is felt to a whole different degree.

There are only a certain amount of players that can be in the senior team setup and while the homegrown talents will be considered first, the standard of performances that you have to deliver is really high.

Premier League and Champions League football is incredibly competitive and the relentless nature of the two competitions means that only the best will have a chance of featuring for the team.

In the case of Caoihmin Kelleher, he has never really been able to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper in the senior team. All the hard work was done by breaking out of the academy, but after six years of trying, he is still not good enough to breakout from his role as Alisson's understudy.

As such, while the club might not be actively pushing him out, the Irishman has felt increasingly empowered to try and find a new home where he can be a team's No. 1, although the Reds might now find themselves in an untenable position created by their own strategy.

Kelleher's attempts to leave might be blocked by Liverpool

When it's all said and done, given the year's of service that he has delivered for the club, it should be perfectly adequate for Kelleher to decide that he wants to progress in his career rather than continue to spend most of his time on the sidelines.

The team got him for nothing and he will be solid for pure profit. It's a win-win from almost every angle.

Especially when we consider the fact that Kelleher has known all season that a new goalkeeper is going to arrive at the end of the season, after a £30m agreement was struck last summer with Valencia for Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Georgian was loaned out to his former-club for the campaign, on the basis that he would be up to speed when the season came to a close, ready to compete with Alisson for the No. 1 shirt.

In turn, Kelleher would have his wishes facilitated. A replacement for him was already given the green light, allowing the Irishman to move on and find a club who wanted him in a full-time role.

But now, Mamardashvili has reportedly had a change of heart, which will create an enormous headache for everyone involved as Liverpool might now have to go back on their word.

According to Cadena SER, via Estadio Deportivo, Giorgi Mamardashvili is considering his options ahead of this summer, when he is expected to finally meet up with his new Liverpool colleagues at Merseyside.

The report claims that because Alisson is unlikely to move on from Liverpool this season, the Georgian is looking at the idea of spending the 2025/26 season at Valencia, on the basis that he would become the first-choice goalkeeper when he eventually joins the Reds because Alisson would have left by then.

Now, for Kelleher, this is a serious kick in the teeth. A goalkeeper that is so unwilling to fight for his place is refusing to do the hard yards and work as the second choice until he manager changes his mind.

Furthermore, Liverpool would have to fight tooth and nail to try and get Kelleher to stay, because another No. 2 goalkeeper would need to be brought in otherwise if the Irishman's move was sanctioned while Mamardashvili refuses to meet up with his new colleagues.

The issue doesn't officially have to be dealt with until the summer, so fans don't necessarily have to worry about it for the time being, but alarm bells will certainly be ringing in the club's recruitment department.
