Liverpool go into the final international break of the calendar year on a high, after seeing off Brentford 3-0 at Anfield.

The comfortable win was just what Jurgen Klopp and co needed after that disappointing draw at Luton and keeps alive hopes of a title race, with some huge fixtures on the horizon.

Having struggled to capitalise on their chances at Kenilworth Road a week ago, the Reds had no such problem in front of their own fans on Sunday.

After Darwin Nuñez twice had efforts ruled out for offside, the Uruguayan set up Mohamed Salah to open the scoring on 39 minutes.

The Egyptian made it two in the second half with a header from Kostas Tsimikas' cross, while Diogo Jota put the icing on the cake with an effort struck from the edge of the area.

After the game, Brentford boss hailed Salah as the difference maker on the day, as Liverpool's number 11 hit 200 goals in English football.

He said: “I think off the top of my head he is potentially the best player in the Premier League.

“In term’s of goals and assists, what a level. Must be one of the best offensive players in the world – like not top 10, top three, sitting here on the spot.”

LIVERPOOL'S PREMIER LEAGUE STANDING

The victory puts the Reds into second place in the Premier League table with 27 points after 12 games.

Klopp's side sit just a point behind Manchester City (28), who drew 4-4 with Chelsea on Sunday, and level with third-placed Arsenal. However, Liverpool's superior goal difference sees they go ahead of the Gunners, who won 3-1 against Burnley at the weekend.

Meanwhile, early pace-setters Tottenham are down in fourth (26 points) after defeat at Wolves.

Next up for Liverpool is that crunch tie away at Manchester City on Saturday 25 November, following the international break.

The Reds' position going into that clash is all the better for the win over Brentford.

The task is clear now: beat City and go top.
