Liverpool missed out on a chance to gain ground at the top of the Premier League table this weekend after a frustrating draw at Luton Town.

The Reds went into the meeting at Kenilworth Road – their first in the league since the early nineties – as heavy favourites, but found themselves frustrated by Rob Edwards' hardworking side.

After the game, Jurgen Klopp side identified a lack of 'calm' in his side's finishing as the visitors were unable to make the most of the opportunities they created.

The game got its first goal on 80 minutes when Luton substitute Tahith Chong stunned Kenilworth Road by putting the finishing touch to a counter-attack, while it was only a stoppage-time equaliser from another player off the bench, Luis Diaz, that stopped Liverpool from being fully embarrassed.

Diaz's goal was a poignant one, with the player making his first appearance since his father was kidnapped in Colombia over a week ago.

The 26-year-old winger revealed his undershirt with the message 'freedom for papa' in the celebrations.

While the ending was dramatic and emotionally charged, ultimately the result will be seen as two points dropped for Liverpool in their title ambitions.

Liverpool's Premier League Standing

The point away at Luton leaves Liverpool in third place in the Premier League table, with 24 points, after 11 games.

Klopp's side sit two points behind Tottenham (26 points) – who can extend that with a win over Chelsea on Monday night – and three behind current leaders and title holders Manchester City (27 points).

Despite the result being a disappointing one, it did see the Reds overtake Arsenal in the standings after the Gunners fell to a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.
