Liverpool standings – Reds' Premier League position after defeat to Tottenham

Liverpool lost their unbeaten status in the Premier League in 2023/24 with a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday evening.

The Reds went into the tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium attempting to take top spot in the table, after Manchester City suffered defeat to Wolves earlier in the day.

Jurgen Klopp's side came out strongly, but a red card for Curtis Jones on 24 minutes changed a game that was ultimately marred by more than one contentious decision.

Jones was dismissed after a VAR review for a dangerous tackle, leaving the away side with ten men.

However, Liverpool thought they had taken the lead not long after. Luis Diaz struck with a fine finish only for the goal to be ruled out for offside – though, curiously, no lines were shown on the TV coverage.

The half ended 1-1 with the Reds levelling the score through Cody Gakpo, after Heung-min Son put the hosts ahead.

There was further controversy in the second half when substitute Diogo Jota was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for two separate fouls. Although, on repeat viewing the first booking appeared extremely harsh with Destiny Udogie seemingly tripping over his own legs.

Klopp's side defended valiantly under the circumstances and looked to have got away with a hard-fought point before Joel Matip turned a cross into his own net with practically the final kick of the game.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Klopp said: "I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions."

Liverpool standings

The result – the Reds first defeat in the Premier League since April – ended their hopes of topping the table after gameweek seven.

Instead Liverpool sit in fourth spot on 16 points, having been leapfrogged by Spurs, who sit second on 17 points, ahead of Arsenal on goals scored.

Manchester City remain on top with 18 points after seven games, despite their defeat.

Next up for Klopp's side in the league is a tricky trip to Brighton on Sunday, 8 October. However, before that the Reds take on Union Sant-Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday.
