Liverpool standings - Reds' league position after 2-1 win at Crystal Palace

Liverpool are top of the league after leaving it late yet again to edge past Crystal Palace in Saturday's early afternoon kick-off.

Playing their second game in four days, the Reds were severely off the pace at Selhurst Park and were fortunate not to be behind at the break after first Alisson, then a VAR review came to the side’s rescue.

Things didn't change after the restart, and in the 55th minute Palace did indeed get a penalty after a late challenge by Jarell Quansah.

Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up and fired in with aplomb, giving Liverpool an uphill battle if they sought to turn the game around.

The turning point in the game came in the 75th minute, when Jordan Ayew saw red for a second bookable offence.

From the resulting free-kick, Liverpool moved into the box and found their equaliser just one minute later, with Mo Salah seeing his deflected effort fly into the net, marking the 200th goal of his Reds career.

Then, as the clock ticked over into injury time, Harvey Elliott found a gap on the edge of the box to fire home the winner.

Thanks in part to results elsewhere, the Reds now sit in a cushty first place in the Premier League table with a tally of 37 points.

They're one point ahead of second-placed Arsenal, who drop down the table after suffering defeat to Aston Villa - who are in third place with 35 points.

Manchester City, level on points with Villa in fourth, keep within two points of the Reds after escaping embarrassment at Kenilworth Road, coming from behind to beat Luton Town 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

It's tight at the top, but Jurgen Klopp's currently have the edge over their opposition.
