Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has recently defended former Reds shot-stopper Simon Mignolet.

The club signed the Belgium international from Sunderland for a transfer fee of €10.60 million back in the summer of 2013.

Mignolet went on to make 204 appearances for Liverpool's first-team. However, the 33-year-old did make a few errors which led to goals during his time as a Red.

With that being the case, Mignolet's ability was questioned by most Liverpool fans. However, Achterberg believes that the shot-stopper deserved more respect.

After Mignolet was replaced by Loris Karius and Alisson, he departed Anfield and signed for Club Brugge ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Achterberg told Het Laatste Nieuws the following: “Simon is just a very good goalkeeper, but at Liverpool, they expected everything to be perfect. Today I still see much inferior goalkeepers than Simon in the Premier League, where he certainly could and can play.

“Because of that negativity, nobody came to him, even though he wanted to play every week.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Mignolet was certainly not terrible for Liverpool. There is a reason why the Belgium international made over 200 appearances for the club's first-team.

But, Mignolet wasn't world-class for the Reds. The goalkeeper simply made too many mistakes which led to goals.

Therefore, we weren't too disappointed when Mignolet departed Anfield.
