Liverpool show interest in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz

Liverpool would reportedly be interested in a move for midfielder Douglas Luiz should Aston Villa be open to selling the Brazilian.

The Reds signed four midfielders during the summer as part of their rebuild, bringing in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravneberch.

However, despite tabling an ultimately unsuccessful £111m bid for Moises Caicedo, who later joined Chelsea, Liverpool didn't sign a defensive midfielder capable of playing week in and week out in Jurgen Klopp's side.

As a result, it's believed that Liverpool are still in the hunt for someone to play at the base of the midfield, the No. 6 role having been inhabited by Mac Allister this season with varying degrees of success.

Anfield Watch understands that the Reds have expressed interest in Fluminense's Andre, as well as having kept an eye on the progress of Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup.

However, according to 90min, Aston Villa's Luiz is also a name that has interested the Reds following an impressive spell under Unai Emery in the Midlands.

The report suggests that Liverpool would be interested in pursuing the 25-year-old holding midfielder should he choose to leave Villa Park, although the Reds have received no indication that an exit is likely in the near future.

It's expected that Villa will rebuff any offers that come in for one of their star players as they continue to rise up the league table and establish themselves as top four contenders.

Man City, with which Luiz spent several years in the early stages of his career, and Arsenal have also shown interest, with the Gunners even seeing three bids rejected last year for the ten-cap international.

Luiz has been superb this season and has developed a strong partnership with Boubacar Kamara in midfield. The Brazilian has been one of the key reasons that Villa find themselves fourth in the Premier League table.

The former Girona man has also netted five times in the league this term and provided two assists for teammates as he becomes an increasingly influential member of Emery's squad.
