Last summer the Reds' new sporting director opted for a quiet window, with little activity on the arrivals front. The idea was to give Arne Slot time with the squad he inherited before making big decisions about the futures of some of Liverpool's players.

After almost a season now, Slot now has a much clearer idea of what he wants from his players and who the key players are in his team.

It's also clear, who might leave and what additions are needed in the squad.

But in order to make that happen, Hughes needs to operate carefully in order to ensure Liverpool remain within the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Why Chelsea are ready to sign Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher for £40m

If Liverpool are to make big purchases, it means the Reds will have to go back to what worked so well under Michael Edwards in the previous regime.

Edwards was a master at selling players at the right time and for big money in order to generate key funds to sustain the Reds and allow them to maintain a competitive edge in the market.

Now it's Hughes' turn to do the same and it seems like he could be looking to cash in big for one of the fringe players in Slot's team.

According to a report by Football Insider, Chelsea and Bournemouth are two of the clubs who are preparing moves to sign Caoimhin Kelleher with both teams ready to pay Liverpool's £40m asking price.

This would be a great piece of business from the Reds. Kelleher is a second choice goalkeeper who has been reliable and brilliant every time he's been called upon.

However, Hughes agreed a deal to bring Giorgi Mamardashvili to the club last summer and the Georgian will be linking up with the Reds later this year.

Mamardashvili is the perfect replacement for Kelleher which leaves the Irishman surplus to requirements at Anfield.

Selling him for £40m would be an incredible piece of business and one that could very well fund Hughes' important spending spree. It's exactly the type of windfall he needs ahead of a huge summer of business.
