'It's NECESSARY!' - Salah admits Liverpool legacy depends on winning another league title
Mohamed Salah has laid down the gauntlet to his Liverpool team-mates, declaring that it’s NECESSARY for the Reds to win another league title in order to secure their legacy as an all-time great Premier League team.
Liverpool won their first league title in three decades back in 2020, when Jurgen Klopp led the club to their historic 19th top-flight triumph.
Since then however, they have been forced to look on as Manchester City sweep the domestic honours board with Pep Guardiola’s team reeling off three Premier Leagues in a row.
They have had some success in the domestic cups, winning an FA Cup and two Carabao Cups, but the big prizes have eluded them.
With Klopp departing Anfield at the end of this season, this is the last chance for the German’s Liverpool team to shore up their place in history before he leaves.
And Salah, 31, who has been a major part of all of Klopp’s major trophy triumphs at Anfield, is adamant that the side’s legacy depends on adding more silverware.
In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s game against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, the team’s top scorer was asked if he felt like his club needed another title to be remembered as a great Premier League team.
“Absolutely,” he replied. “We won just one Premier League, one Champions League and other cups but I think it's necessary to win another one.
“I believe that we can win this one, we just need to focus on each game but I think it's necessary to win the title, the Premier League.”
Salah: Our legacy depends on league title
When pressed as to why he deemed it necessary, with Klopp having already presided over eight major honours, the Egyptian added that the team’s reputation depended on landing the biggest prizes.
“It's necessary to win one more,” he said. “We won the league just one time so it would be great to win a second time.
“Two times to win the Premier League and one Champions League, I think it's necessary for our legacy here in the club to win the Premier League for a second time.”
Salah has been Liverpool’s top scorer in each of his six full seasons since arriving from Roma in 2017 and is again on course to be the Reds’ leading marksman this term.
He has also hoovered up the individual honours during his time in red, as a two-time PFA Players’ Player of the Year award winner and a two-time African Footballer of the Year.
