Liverpool running into ANOTHER Trent Alexander-Arnold contract saga

He came to the rescue on Sunday afternoon, but his future is still very much up in the air.

Trent Alexander-Arnold feels like he could very plausibly head to Real Madrid this summer, even if his decision has not yet been made.

Against Leicester City with his emotional celebration Alexander-Arnold gave plenty of us hope. Not necessarily that he might have decided to stay but that at least he is still considering that option.

Although it's still way more likely at this stage that he ends up playing in Spain next season.

But whatever happens, this whole situation is a stark warning to Liverpool. Losing Alexander-Arnold a boyhood hero, who has been at the club since U9 level is something that the Reds cannot afford to repeat.

Players like Alexander-Arnold are becoming a rarity in the modern game. The Reds have to protect their own homegrown stars at all cost.

That is not what is happening with Curtis Jones though.

Jones's contract actually expires in 2027, with the Scouser having signed a new deal back in 2022.

That deal reflected his status at the time when he was still a young star trying to break into the squad - per Capology, he's on around £15k each week.

But now Jones is one of the most consistent and regular players in the Liverpool squad, who is always available.

Yet with just two years left on his current deal, Liverpool have not shown any signs of rewarding him this season - despite Jones putting in some excellent performances and becoming the face of the scouseness that still remains in this Liverpool squad.

It was telling that against Leicester as the rest of Liverpool's players celebrated the Reds' win, Jones stormed off the pitch and headed straight into the dressing room.

Part of that will be his frustration at having been used as a late substitute, coming on after the 90th minute to pretty much just waste time.

But could there be more bubbling under the surface?

Given the current terms that he is on, one would not blame Jones if he was frustrated. Especially considering some of the other players in the team earn considerably more.

Liverpool have to act now before this situation spirals out of control. With Alexander-Arnold already so close to leaving the Reds cannot afford to risk losing Jones and the club's true identity in the process.

If this situation drags on longer, Liverpool will just find themselves in another Alexander-Arnold contract saga and nobody wants that.

So, it's time for Richard Hughes to sit down on the negotiating table with Jones and give him the contract he deserves that truly reflects his status and importance.
