But it was the way Firmino played that won him the hearts and minds of the Anfield faithful. His tenacity, willingness to press and larger-than-life character made him essential to Jurgen Klopp’s greatest Liverpool sides.

This was why it was difficult to se him finally depart Merseyside for Saudi Arabia, but a salary of around £300,000 per-week and the chance to join Riyad Mahrez and co. was understandable.

Things started well at Al-Ahli for Firmino. His 15 goal involvements as captain took them to third in the Saudi Pro League and into the AFC Champions League during their first season after being promoted to the top flight.

But things have taken a spiral this season. Ahli sit fifth in the league at time of writing and Firmino only holds three league goals and two assists in 12 games and was dropped from the season’s biggest games against fellow-PIF-funded sides Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal.

Rumours have followed of his departure from Saudi Arabia as a result, most recently being a possible move to Turkey to link up with Jose Mourinho as he builds his new regime at Fenerbache.

And now South American outlet Bolavip are reporting that Brazilian giants Flamengo are after him.

Could Firmino return to Brazil?

Flamengo, now managed by former Chelsea player Filipe Luis, have grown into quite the powerhouse in recent years. Their back-to-back league titles in 2019 and 2020 were accompanied by Copa Libertadores wins in 2019 and 2022, and they have only finished outside the top four of the Brazilian Serie A once since 2017.

They finished third this past season, nine points off winners Botafogo, and were knocked out in the Libertadores quarter-finals by Uruguayan outfit Peñarol, but did with the Copa do Brasil.

As a result they are looking for a centre-forward to revitalise their ranks as they head into a season involving the revamped Club World Cup.

Firmino hasn’t played in Brazil since he left for Hoffenheim in 2011, but this could be exactly what he needs to revitalise the later stages of his career.
