The player to manager pipeline is a road often trodden, but isn’t one that too many players find great success in.

And truly great players can struggle more than most, largely due to not being able to communicate how to do the amazing things they could do without really thinking.

Steven Gerrard has been a prime example of this for Liverpool fans. The dream was that he could one day have the success with the Reds as manager that he did as player, but his recent ill-fated spells at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq after a promising run with Scottish side Rangers dispelled that.

There are exceptions, of course. Pep Guardiola was a brilliant midfielder that became arguably the best manager of all time. Antonio Conte was a star for Juventus and the Italian national team, whilst Carlo Ancelotti was a stalwart at both Roma and AC Milan.

One failed example with a Liverpool edge, however, is Robbie Fowler. The 183 goals scored in for his boyhood side is the Reds’ sixth most ever and he was regarded as a true hero of the club.

His managerial career, however, has been less than stellar. Three months at Thai side Muangthong United, less than ideal years at Brisbane Roar and East Bengal, before eight games at Saudi side Al-Qadsiah in 2023 has been all Fowler has managed (pardon the pun) in his stints so far.

But that could be about to change. According to The Mirror, Fowler is eyeing up the now-available Bolton Wanderers job.

Could Robbie Fowler be the next Bolton manager?

The report states that Fowler “is looking for an opportunity to manage in England”, with sources close to him confirming that he is interested in the role.

He will face stiff competition with former Bolton legend Sam Allardyce rumoured for the position, as well as Rotherham United manager Steve Evans and former Stoke boss Steven Schumacher.

If Fowler were to be given the nod, he’d be coming into a tough situation. Bolton sit seventh in League One, just outside the playoff places but 14 points adrift from the automatic promotion places.

After losing to Oxford United in the League One playoff final last year, the side were expected to give the automatics a serious push. But a combination of lacklustre performances, as well as domination by Birmingham City, Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham has left them at sea.

But, as far as first jobs in England go, Fowler could do worse. It would be an exciting opportunity for the former striker to prove his ability at a big side looking to restore some former glory.
