Redefining the role of a right-back over the years, Trent's ability on the ball is second to none.

Playing at the heart of Liverpool's attacking system, it is almost unthinkable that the club has let his contract run down as it has.

While Trent's talents have been admired by clubs around the world, many dismissed the possibility that he might ever leave Merseyside having spent his entire career so far at his boyhood club.

But until Liverpool put an acceptable contract extension on the table for Trent to sign, it remains incredibly likely that the right-back could walk out the door for free.

Real Madrid have been widely reported as a potential suitor for Trent, given his desire to win trophies across the remainder of his career and his positive relationship with fellow countryman Jude Bellingham.

Alongside this, Real Madrid are in need of a new right-back after Dani Carvajal tore three different ligaments in his knee - an injury that sees him on the sidelines for the next 12 months.

In a new report from MARCA, Trent Alexander-Arnold is considered "one name [that] appears above all others", and Liverpool apparently "know that he [Trent] is not going to renew his contract", so there may be talks of a potential transfer in January.

This would enable Liverpool to receive a "significant amount of money" for the right-back, but it would leave the Reds with limited time to find a replacement if Conor Bradley was not favoured by Arne Slot for the role in the long term.

The club will be working hard behind the scenes to secure Trent's services beyond this season, but he can begin negotiations of his own with rival clubs from January 1st and the prospect of Liverpool receiving a fee for Trent may be enticing if negotiations collapse.

But it cannot be understated how significant a move it would be if Trent were to leave Liverpool at all, especially given fans' envisioned pathway for the homegrown talent to follow in Steven Gerrard's footsteps of being a one-club man and eventually Liverpool's captain.

To some, earning a fee from Trent's departure may be a silver lining, but letting Trent go prematurely would be a deeply controversial move from the club.
