Liverpool were furious on Wednesday evening as they were robbed by a shocking double mistake by referees. Arne Slot lost his head - but who could blame him?

Liverpool weren't at their best against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening. Regardless, they should have got a draw in London.

Neither team did enough to win - but Liverpool will go into the second leg at Anfield a goal down. And that earned Spike Hulshoff a yellow card.

The Dutchman was furious after the winning goal here, ranting at the Fourth Official to draw a booking. He'd just watched Lucas Bergvall bag for Spurs and it's one that simply shouldn't have happened.

Just one minute prior to the goal, Bergvall dived into a tackle on Kostas Tsimikas as Liverpool were breaking away. He brought the full-back down, but Luis Diaz continued with the ball.

And that gave the referee an excuse to ignore the incident. It wouldn't have been a great deal but Bergvall was already on a yellow card - it was unquestionably a yellow-card offence.

But that wasn't all. Tsimikas went down after the challenge and was forced to wait on the sidelines before being sent back on.

Before he was able to get back on, Spurs scored - and it was Bergvall who found the net. Not only were Spurs not down to 10, then, Liverpool were.

Liverpool vs the referees

Liverpool do not have a happy history at Tottenham recently. After all, they were on the wrong side of the WOAT VAR decision last season as Luis Diaz saw an onside goal ruled out for offside.

And so what do you do? Liverpool were screwed then and they were screwed here.

The positive is that they've at least got a chance to make up for this one. There's a second leg at Anfield and Slot will have his team ready for that one.

He was far from happy with his team here and you can bet there are changes on the way.
