Liverpool highest ever Anfield attendances after Reds break 75-year-old record

Here are the record attendances of Liverpool across all competitions as the Anfield Road stand finally opens. The Reds have already broken records this season.

Liverpool have been made to wait to play in front of a full-capacity crowd at home this season.

After delays to the £80m Anfield Road Stand redevelopment dragged past the start of the 2023/24 campaign, the Reds partially opened the stand for the visit of Manchester United in December — with over 57,000 in attendance to watch what was ultimately a disappointing curtain raiser for the re-opened upper tier.

More significantly than the events on the field that day, was the number of fans in the stands.

Two months later, Anfield finally saw attendance jump to almost 60,000 for the visit of Burnley on 10 February — a league record, but not an all-time one.

Here are the current highest ever attendances at Liverpool across competitions.

Record home attendance – vs Wolves, February 1952 (61,905)

Liverpool's outright record stands at 61,905 fans in attendance to watch an FA Cup tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1952. The Reds would win the game 2-1 on the day (with Bob Paisley scoring the opener).

Of course, this isn't a record that Liverpool will break anytime soon. Their current plan is to expand to up to 61,000 when the full Anfield Road stand fully re-opens, keeping the record out of reach.

But down the line, and with more investment into expansion, perhaps this one could fall one day.

Record league attendance – vs Burnley, February 2024 (59,896)

Liverpool were able to overcome early struggles to beat Burnley 3-1, doing so it in front of a record league attendance at Anfield.

Some 59,896 supporters were present as the Anfield Road development surpassed its latest milestone.

The figure breaks the previous record for a league game held at Anfield of 58,757, a record that had stood since December 1949, when the Reds played out a 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

On the close-to-filled Anfield Road Stand, Klopp said: "Outstanding. Oh my God! Before I really heard it, I saw it already. It looks exceptional. Absolutely exceptional.

"This stadium grew and grew, it was always wonderful but now it's really outrageously wonderful. Really top. Really top. Really loud in the right moments."

Prior to the win over Burnley, the Anfield record for a Premier League game came back in October 2018 when 53,373 attended a 4-1 win over Cardiff.

Record European attendance – vs Barcelona, April 1976 (55,104)

Another one that Liverpool could and should break this season.

The Reds hosted 55,104 fans in the UEFA Cup when Barcelona visited in April 1976. The game finished 1-1 (2-1 on aggregate), and Bob Paisley's side would go on to win the trophy.

The new capacity could bump this record by quite some way as Liverpool aim to go deep in the Europa League this year.

With the Reds into the last 16 of this year's tournament and are still on the road to Dublin, the record could be surpassed by as much as 5,000 in the next round of fixtures scheduled for next month.
